About Mister Ed’s Eclectia

Yeah, I know that “Eclectia” isn’t really a word.

It’s OK.  We’ll all be fine.

This blog is a little experiment I’m running.  I’ve never done a blog before, but with the WordPress system, it’s not very hard to do at all so I thought I’d give it a shot.

So … “Neo Digital Luddite” .. WTF?  You may want to read this terrific treatise by T.E. Jacobson on being a Neo-Luddite.  Enter the term in to your favorite search engine and you’ll gather a wealth of information on the subject.

Why do I choose the term “Neo Digital Luddite”?  It’s fairly simple, really.  It’s a term I’ve used for years to describe myself.  I make use of, every day, some of the highest of high tech wizardry that’s around.  I work in the commercial broadcast television industry as an SBE Certified Senior Television Engineer.  But after doing that for a long while now, I can say without a doubt that simpler is frequently better.  More and deeper technology is seldom the answer.  Not all problems or issues can be solved with a computer or software or heavily microprocessor-ized piece of hardware.  In fact, in many cases, more technology, more software, more boxes, more menus, more KVMs, more servers, more interconnectivity … well, sometimes – actually a LOT of times – it just makes things worse and more difficult.

Until the digital wizards out there become much, much more successful at making their systems behave so that human beings can naturally interact with them rather than us having to be trained to think and behave like the machines, I will continue to resist the latest most bleeding edge crap that is constantly foisted upon us by the technocrats.

So, while I embrace technology where it is useful, I most definitely shun it and cast it out when it’s being offered or proposed as technology for technology’s sake.

Consider this, in some small way, my version of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses. nailed to the door of the modern age.

Beyond that, I have other thoughts rattling around in my head about the daily role of techie stuff in our lives, among other random stuff.

Have a nice day.  Go enjoy some sunshine.
