I recently relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, and back to the corporation that I worked for up until the fall of 2007, to take over as Director of Engineering at CBS 5, KPHO. I've been doing this work for a long time, but if you think I have nothing left to learn, you'd be wrong. The broadcast business is changing every day - and particularly during our current hard times, it's facing challenges it never faced before. KPHO is currently in a very aggressive build phase, having launched HD news and a full HD broadcast plant in the spring of 2009, and we're now working on the build to become Meredith's western centralcast hub very soon. Meanwhile, this is the first time in my career that I've run a broadcast operation in another time zone than Eastern or Pacific - and Arizona time is Arizona time, not necessarily Mountain time, depending on the time of year. Since the networks don't provide mountain zone feeds, the workload at any station in this time zone is a little higher than a typical net affiliate in the others - since all network programming has to be recorded locally from the east coast feed and then played back in pattern. But I love - absoutely LOVE - new and different challenges, so I'm positively in my element here in Phoenix at CBS 5. ![]()
